Gastritis: Causes, Signs And Treatment

Gastritis is a condition characterized by inflammation of the lining of the stomach. The stomach lining, also known as the gastric mucosa, serves a crucial role in protecting the stomach from the acidic digestive juices it produces. When the lining becomes inflamed, it can lead to various symptoms and discomfort.

There are several possible causes of gastritis, including:

  1. Helicobacter pylori infection: This bacterium is a common cause of gastritis. It can weaken the stomach’s protective lining and lead to inflammation.
  2. Regular use of certain medications: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen can irritate the stomach lining and cause gastritis.
  3. Stress: While stress doesn’t directly cause gastritis, it can exacerbate symptoms and make the condition worse.
  4. Autoimmune diseases: In some cases, the immune system mistakenly attacks the stomach lining, leading to gastritis.

Symptoms of gastritis can vary but may include:

  • Abdominal pain or discomfort
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Bloating
  • Belching
  • Indigestion
  • Black, tarry stools (indicating bleeding in the stomach)
  • Vomiting blood (indicating severe bleeding)

Treatment for gastritis depends on the underlying cause and severity of symptoms. Common treatments include:

Medications:

  • Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) to reduce stomach acid production and allow the stomach lining to heal.
  • Antacids to neutralize stomach acid and provide symptom relief.
  • Antibiotics to eradicate H. pylori infection if present.
  • Medications to protect the stomach lining, such as prostaglandin analogs.
  1. Avoiding irritants: This may include avoiding NSAIDs, alcohol, spicy foods, and other substances that can irritate the stomach lining.
  2. Dietary changes: Consuming a bland diet and avoiding foods that exacerbate symptoms can help manage gastritis. Eating smaller, more frequent meals may also be beneficial.
  3. Stress management: Practicing relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing exercises, meditation, or yoga, can help reduce stress and minimize its impact on gastritis symptoms.
  4. Treating underlying conditions: If gastritis is caused by an underlying condition, such as an autoimmune disease, managing that condition may help alleviate gastritis symptoms.

If left untreated, gastritis can lead to complications such as stomach ulcers, bleeding, or an increased risk of stomach cancer. Therefore, it’s essential to seek medical attention if you experience symptoms of gastritis for proper diagnosis and management.
